This course introduced students to Computer-assisted Language Learning (CALL), the use and study of computer applications and the Internet in second language teaching and research. In the first part of the course we will explore the background of CALL, principles underlying CALL as an area of inquiry, as well as current trends in the field. We'll also look at connections between SLA and CALL and learn how to evaluate software and Internet materials. Throughout the class, we will learn how to use software programs to create and implement computer-assisted language learning activities. In the second part of the class we will focus on CALL pedagogy and research in the area of individual language skills. In the final part we will examine future trends: gaming, virtual worlds, and social-networking technologies as well as blended, distance and mobile learning.
